VIDEO: China Ditches the Scare Tactic in a New Campaign for 'Fresh Air'

China has a new strategy for getting people invested in the nation's campaign to clean up its air: Stop being so serious!

In a new ad campaign by Hong Kong's Clean Air Network, actors tout the amazing benefits of "fresh air" -- represented, in this case, by a can of "oxygen" (which looks not like a can of "hair spray") -- like, for instance, "standing up," "breathing," and "smelling horses." (The joys!)

Brad Pitt's 'Make It Right' Foundation Shows Us How To Do Good -- And Go Green

Just two days ago, America marked the five year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, the tragic natural disaster that terrorized New Orleans and its citizens, displacing thousands of people whose homes were destroyed in the floods.

In India, Indigenous Tribal Groups Win a Landmark Battle

This week, indigenous cultures everywhere scored a major victory when India's Minister of Environment and Forests rejected the construction of a mine that would have razed a local environment and displaced the people of  Dongria Kondh tribe. It's just one case, of course, but it's pretty significant: It is exceedingly rare for indigenous tribal groups to triumph over the powerful (and well-financed) voices of corporate interest -- particularly in the energy arena.

The UN's New Dietary Recommendation? Eat Bugs

I've long believed that people who are concerned about the well-being of the planet should do whatever possible to protect the environment. And I'm usually pretty good at upholding that belief. But today, I read that the UN is urging insect consumption -- by humans! for dinner! -- as a strategy with which to cut down on famine and global warming. And I started to question my ability to uphold my end of the bargain.

Five years ago, in an effort to alleviate the  Portugal's heavy dependence on foreign oil, the country's government  embarked on a five-year national project to develop and transition to renewable energy sources. And guess what? It totally worked.

Morning Motivator: TOMS shoes heal the world.

Do you have a sole? Cheesy pun tended. If you answered yes, you might love TOMS shoes as much I do. The company was founded on a beautiful, simple premise: “With every pair you purchase, TOMS will give a pair of new shoes to a child in need.” The American footwear line is inspired by Alpargata shoes which have been worn by farmers in Argentina for 100 years! They are lightweight, comfy and resemble espadrilles.

Morning Motivator: See Your Seafood

I don’t know about you but summer is when I eat the most seafood during the year. I love cocktail shrimp and scallops but I need to be more aware of sustainable seafood especially since oceans across the world are so overfished!

Want To Cool Down? Don't Turn On The AC

Is out air conditioning turning us into a bunch of sensitive babies? Well, to but it bluntly, yes.

Most Americans have become accustomed to surviving stifling summer heat with air conditioning and we are worse off for it. And, no, we aren’t just talking about the negative effects that excessive air conditioning has on the environment, the effect our perfect 68-degree inside world has contributed to making the outside world hotter and our tolerance for heat lower.

California Schools Lead the Charge in Sustainability

In Los Angeles public schools, there's a new item on the curriculum: Going green.

How green would you go?

I carry a canvas bag when I go shopping, recycle as much as I can, and use my apartment air conditioner maybe five times a year.

But would I, Amanda Green, give up toilet paper to be Amanda Green-er?

No way!
